A Ohio news story said claimants are frustrated by months long delays due to growing backlogs. In 2024 Ohio took in $528 million and returned $150 million and in 2025 it took in $649 million and returned $112 million. Leaving a $915 million windfall. Clearly there is enough revenue to fund enough staff to process claims within the time allowed by law.
Georgia is taking 3.5 times longer to process claims. In 2024 Georgia took in $264 million and returned $55 million and in 2025 it took in $314 million and returned $114 million. Leaving a $409 million windfall. In 2024 the unclaimed property budget was $1,6 million and in 2025 it was $2.86 million.
When unclaimed property administrators have to compete with the state for the use of the funds, unclaimed property owners suffer.
